In July 2026, the NUM International Program in Law (NUM iLAW) represented the National University of Management at the 26th International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot (IMLAM), hosted by Sydney Law School, The University of Sydney, from 5 to 10 July 2026. The competition brought together law students from universities around the world to demonstrate their legal knowledge, research, written advocacy, and oral pleading skills in international maritime law. The International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot is a competition focusing on commercial maritime law and arbitration, where students argue a hypothetical shipping dispute before an arbitral tribunal.
Before departing for Australia, the Maritime Moot Team paid a courtesy call on H.E. Prof. Hor Peng, Rector of the National University of Management, on 30 June 2026. The team reported on their preparation and expressed their appreciation for the continuous guidance and support provided by the university leadership, NUM iLAW management, and coaches throughout months of research, writing, and oral advocacy training.
During the general rounds in Sydney, NUM competed against School of Law, Christ University; National Law University, Delhi; Hidayatullah National Law University; and the University of Copenhagen, appearing in both Claimant and Respondent roles.
The competition gave the students an opportunity to apply their legal knowledge in a practical setting, respond to questions from experienced arbitrators, experience different styles of advocacy, and represent NUM iLAW and Cambodia in an international academic environment.
Learning Beyond the Competition
As part of the wider academic journey in Australia, the delegation also participated in several academic and professional visits.
On 9 July 2026, Mr. Din Siden, Director of NUM iLAW, visited Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, and the Faculty of Law, Monash University, where discussions focused on legal education, experiential learning, student development, international engagement, and possible future academic cooperation.
On 10 July 2026, the NUM iLAW team visited Corrs Chambers Westgarth in Sydney, where they learned about arbitration, commercial litigation, complex disputes, client service, and professional legal practice. The team also joined a networking lunch with lawyers from the disputes practice group.
Following the competition, Mr. Din Siden and Mrs. SIN Soromnear, Coach of the NUM iLAW Maritime Team, visited Sydney Law School, The University of Sydney, on 13 July 2026, and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) on 14 July 2026. These visits provided further insights into legal education, moot court and advocacy training, international arbitration, mediation, commercial dispute resolution, and opportunities for future cooperation.
Appreciation
NUM iLAW extends its sincere appreciation to H.E. Prof. Hor Peng, Rector of the National University of Management, and the university leadership for their continued support of students participating in international academic and moot court activities.
Our sincere thanks also go to the NUM iLAW management, coaches, lecturers, parents, families, friends, alumni, and all supporters whose encouragement and assistance contributed to the team's preparation and journey.
NUM iLAW also greatly appreciates Sydney Law School and the organisers of IMLAM, as well as Melbourne Law School, Monash University Faculty of Law, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, ACICA, and all academics and legal professionals who warmly welcomed the delegation.
The Maritime Moot journey was more than a competition. It was an opportunity for our students to learn beyond the classroom, strengthen their legal and advocacy skills, engage with the international legal community, and proudly represent NUM and Cambodia on the international stage.
