Following the first Moot Court Fundamentals Training held in September, NUM International Program of Legal Studies (NUM iLAW) is pleased to offer a second intake of the Moot Court Fundamentals Training for students who were unable to join the first session and for aspiring law students who would like to begin exploring the world of mooting.
The training will take place on 10 October 2026 and is designed as an introductory course for participants with little or no prior mooting experience. It aims to help students understand what moot court is, how moot competitions work, and how participation in mooting can help develop important legal, academic, and professional skills.
Moot court is a simulated legal proceeding in which students work with a fictional legal dispute involving real legal issues. Participants learn how legal arguments are developed through research and written submissions and how advocates present those arguments orally before a panel of judges.
What Participants Will Learn
The training introduces participants to the foundations of mooting and the key stages involved in preparing for a moot court competition.
Participants will explore:
- Understanding Moot Court — what moot court is, how it works, and why it is valuable for law students.
- The Mooting Landscape — university, national, and international levels of mooting, including the different opportunities available to students.
- The Moot Competition Process — from registration and release of the moot problem to clarifications, written submissions, and oral rounds.
- Understanding a Moot Problem — identifying the parties, facts, procedural background, legal issues, applicable law, and relief requested.
- Legal Research and Written Advocacy — how to begin research from a defined legal issue, identify relevant sources, read cases effectively, and structure legal arguments.
- Building Legal Arguments — understanding the relationship between the legal rule, authority, application to the facts, and conclusion.
- Written Memorials — an introduction to the structure of a moot memorial and the elements of effective written advocacy.
- Oral Advocacy Fundamentals — how to structure an oral submission, provide a clear roadmap, use signposting, and present arguments effectively before a tribunal.
- Courtroom Etiquette and Professional Conduct — addressing the bench respectfully, speaking clearly and confidently, relying on the record and authorities, and maintaining professional conduct.
- Common Beginner Mistakes — including unfocused research, memorising speeches without responding to questions, quoting cases without applying them, and overlooking competition rules and deadlines.
The training also introduces students to the wider opportunities that can come through mooting. Moot court can help students strengthen their legal research and writing, critical thinking, argument structure, public speaking, courtroom etiquette, teamwork, discipline, confidence, and international exposure.
International and Competition Exposure
NUM iLAW students have participated in a wide range of moot court platforms covering different areas of law and have gained exposure to universities, courts, international organizations, legal institutions, and professional networks around the world.
The training will introduce participants to these opportunities and help them understand how they may begin preparing for future national and international moot court competitions.

No prior mooting experience is required.
